Oh no … no no … no … NO!

Toddler negativity = not so much fun.

A couple weeks ago when Marshall said “Oh no” instead of “Uh oh” and we thought it was super cute. It caught on with Daddy and I – and we repeated it back to him whenever he would say it. THEN it turned into no no … then no … then NO! (including furrowed brow and grumpy face). Since then – he’s been working out the intricate routine of a “tantrum” – so far it’s just sitting on the floor, “NO!” and a little fist pounding. This week he started adding pushing himself onto his tummy – but luckily that’s as far as the tantrum goes. I’m waiting for the kicking and screaming (and I’m pretty sure it’s coming). Along with this nonsense, he still gives us warning – “no no” – whenever he’s doing (or about to do) something he shouldn’t – which is very nice!!

YodaAs we anxiously try not to catch the swine flu until the vaccine is available (any day now!) – we have been relatively homebound for the last couple weeks. Part of this is because I’ve been sick with a terrible cold and don’t want to spread any germs to kiddos in the world (oh and I should mention that since I’m still breastfeeding I can’t take ANYTHING to help me feel better – UGH!). The other part is because I don’t want Marshall to get any other kids germs. Paranoid? Yes. But who cares. We do what we can to protect our kid. That’s all we can do.

In other news, last weekend we went to a pumpkin patch … which was just ok. Then on Sunday we went to the Monster March in Sellwood. Daddy was Luke Skywalker and Marshall was Yoda. The best part was when he wielded the light saber. Serious cuteness! So as Halloween night approaches I’m actually getting kind of excited to hand out candy to the kiddos this year.

15 month checkup

Dr MarshallWe totally love our pediatrician … she’s amazing and we’re so lucky that she was the doc to come and check on us when Marshall was born. One of the biggest reasons we love our doctor – is that she tells us how great out kiddo is – how great is that? She always reassures our worries and doubts as normal, she tells us how “advanced” he is – and though he’s right in the middle for most of his growth curves – she gives us no indication that we have anything all all to worry about.

This last checkup was no different!

Here are the stats:

Height is just over 30″, weight is almost 24 lbs and his head is about 19″ around. In other words – right where he should be and tracking like he has his whole life.

Another reason we really like our doctor is that she’s starting his doctor schooling early – letting him learn how to use the stethoscope – which he enjoyed putting around his neck but not in his ears.

He received his vaccinations and a flu shot (not the H1N1 since it’s not available yet). Was overall very healthy. And showed off all his tricks – talking and sign language. She also praised our parenting – which always feels good.

Our next checkup will be in January when he’s 18 months. Wow. He’ll be a year and a half.

Truly turning into a toddler!

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Marshall has started consistently being a toddler – ie cranky, teething, stubborn, frustrated … he started throwing temper tantrums (mild in comparison to what I’ve heard from some parents) by plopping down on his bum, furrowing his brow and emitting irritable sounds. While we’re learning how to handle these “fits” – it’s still pretty challenging to remain patient as a parent. I find myself saying “no” more than I would like …

He’s also taking more and more tumbles … a few weeks ago he caught his foot going down the slide and took a header onto the protective side rail – the cheek bump turned into a black eye – but he was no worse for the wear! Cool kiddo chillin by the couch all hip-hop. heh. Today he took a header off one of his riding toys – and I’m just waiting for the fall off the chair or the bed (which are his 2 favorite places to climb onto now). Luckily neither is very high … ugh! Daddy and I are working out our “reaction” to these falls – we are trying to heed the warning against running to him everytime he takes a fall … but it’s hard not to! He’s our little dude after all!

In teething – he’s now got 4 teeth on the bottom and top (4th bottom is the most recent), and last week I discovered that 2 of his molars had broken through (NO WONDER HE WAS SO CRANKY!). I’ve been pumping him full of teething tablets, infant tylenol, frozen teethers and frozen fruit – really anything to help relieve the pain!

As we get ready for our 15 month checkup on Wednesday we are faced with yet another parental decision – vaccinations. We will be getting Marshall both the regular flu shot as well as the H1N1 shot … there’s been so much debate about all of these vaccines. Bottom line, both Daddy and I are on the same page.  I totally respect the choices of all the parents we know and love to do what they want with their kiddos. I’m just thankful Casey and I agree on this decision for our little dude!

Marshall's first driving lessonThe only other thing I can remember right now from the last few weeks is last Thursday when Daddy took the afternoon and worked from home. When I got home – Marshall ran out to the car and climbed into my lap in the front seat, took the wheel, turned on the blinker and adjusted the radio … he’s an observant dude!

He’s still walking (well running more at this point) and talking all the time – but I covered most of that in my last post … not much new. He is learning more animal noises (pig is my current favorite) and loves to say airplane (with his hand and the sound) and train (choo choo). We’re looking forward to Fall and perhaps a little pumpkin carving … and of course Halloween!

So much happens everyday – I wish I could be more on top of my posting. I feel like so much has happened in the last few weeks … but honestly right now I can’t even remember it all. Whew.

Til next time …

Man … time flies … Marshall’s 14th month happenings

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

OK so I’ve been a bad blogger and haven’t posted in about a month (yeah yeah …). I’ve been procrastinating cuz there’s SO MUCH that happens everyday for us – the idea of trying to catch up made me sick … but has to be done or it will really only get worse right?

So here goes:

We had a wonderful visit from Marshall’s Rhodes Grandparents over Memorial Day weekend. We trekked down to the Oregon State Fair (what a haul and the traffic was horrible coming home – ugh!). Marshall had a blast, despite not napping. He got to pet some animals, saw cows and a sea lion giving out kisses. We saw a goofy circus act and lots of rides “whee” … we think he’ll REALLY enjoy it next year … but it was fun still!! Marshall got to take many many fun rides around the block with his PawPaw in his car … and loved when MawMaw would sing to him (I think his fave is “Itsy Bitsy Spider). We enjoyed their time here and wish we could see them more often!!

Since then, we’ve been busy with all kinds of things … mostly just trying to keep up with the dude … here’s some “hits” as of late:

Marshall is walking – well – almost running. Here’s a video of him when he was just starting … he still falls down a LOT. And a couple cute ones of him walking in one squeaky shoe … and two.

He’s got his first fat lip (fell on the play structure at Woodstock Park and bit into his bottom lip with his upper teeth), a bruised eye (playing run back and forth from mommy to daddy and had a little collision with mommy’s foot – technically I didn’t kick him but my foot did hit his face), a scraped face (fell at the Buddy Walk last weekend on a stone block by a fountain), countless bonks to the head, and many many scraped knees … yes at this point I can still remember every little scratch and bruise … and they all break my heart.

Marshall is talking – mostly in signs and words only I understand (though daddy is getting a few of them down). We posted a video if you’d like to see!! He communicates about all kinds of animals (giraffe, lion, dog, cat, elephant, snake, bear, frog, tiger, bird, fish …), things we see while driving or walking (bus, truck, train – his fave, trees, flowers), eating (eat, more, cereal, fruit, chicken, cheese, toast, banana), animal sounds (moo, meow, neigh neigh, ssssss, roar, baaa, ruf ruf), other stuff (please, thank you, flower, play, I love you, kiss, hug – aw, mama, dada, HI, hello, bye bye, silly, hat) and of course my favorite “uh oh” and “no no” — uh oh cuz then I know when something fell and no no cuz then I know when he’s doing something he shouldn’t. Ha ha …

This week he started cracking himself up … he’ll babble something from the kitchen then cruise around the corner chuckling and scrunching his face up. Silly boy!!

Marshall listens! He’s so good at listening … though I know it won’t last ,I love it for now! He listens when we tell him to eat something, to do something, to put something away, to get something, and *sometimes* when we tell him NOT to do something … he’s a good listener and I’m so proud of him!! Yeah … I’m bragging but that’s what Moms do right?

Marshall eats!! Man … is he a good eater! He will pretty much eat anything we put in front of him – and if Mommy’s eating it – he DEFINITELY wants to eat it. He understands and repeats the words we say when identifying food. He eats veggies, eggs, cheese, toast, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, mac n cheese noodles … those are our staples … but he’ll eat pretty much anything we put in front of him. He even drinks his milk!

OK that’s about enough for now … I promise to get back on track with weekly posts … these big catchup ones are exhausting and I know I’m forgetting TONS! I’m also very behind on posting pictures and will try to do that this weekend.

One more note … Marshall now has his own YouTube channel … check it out!
