so many firsts!

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

So it’s been a while since I’ve written … and my main excuse? well … so much has happened! Marshall is now MOVING – I mean … crawling … and FAST! On March 24th he started pulling up and standing in his crib (ACK!) … and everything changed! He no longer wants to sleep (it’s laying down and he just wants to stand and explore everything). Also no more free time for me while he just hangs out on the floor. It’s a whole new world! May have to break out that pack and play just to shower!

He took his first “crawl” step – up on his knees – at our 8 month photoshoot with Jen on the 21st. He ate his first fingerfoods on the 28th – gerber graduates sweet potato puffs – and now I can’t get him to stop eating them! He has also tackled Organic O’s cereal, bananas, tiny cheese cubes … and we tried avocado (of which he was NOT a fan!).

He’s really starting to imitate us. He barks like our neighbor’s dog – Sal. He’s been doing that for a while – but NOW he’ll stop whatever he’s doing (nursing, eating, playing) to “unh unh” like the puppy. He also started “so big” both on the changing table – and most recently in his high chair – which we’ve been doing since he was born to stretch him out after naps and such.

He’ll chase me through the house (crawling) – and giggles more and more everyday … loves swinging in swings at the park and being outside … and animals! I think I may have finally convinced Daddy we need to get that boy a DOG! We’re shopping … honestly I think we both want one – but who has time for the work involved? Well … we think MJ’s happiness is worth the extra work! So we may have a new family member soon.

What an amazing adventure this little guy is!!

We’re looking forward to a visit with the Rhodes’ family in Texas next week … yee haw!!

A hint of pink

Springtime in Portland is truly one of my favorite times … the other is Fall. Why? Well … because the blooming of everything in the Spring and the changing of the leaves in Fall are two of the most amazing experiences!! Right now – everything is tinged with pink … all the trees are blooming – each day on my drive to work a new tree has exploded – what was a tree with just brown limbs and a hint of pink is now an explosion of light pink blooms. They come and go very quickly … it’s truly an amazing experience!

Activity!!

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

As Marshall is getting older – he’s definitely becoming much more active. While the self-soothing techniques I used a couple weeks ago were working wonderfully — in the past few days it’s become more challenging again. Naps were never easy … he fights me every inch (though I hear goes down easier for Natalie) he is learning to soothe himself. Nights were so easy for about 2 weeks – and this week are back to challenging. He’s only waking up once – but does NOT want to go down without nursing … and not giving him that really just makes the poor little dude angry! But eventually he does go down … it just takes time and lots of crying (which is not fun for anyone!!).

There are a few reasons I think this is happening … most of which have to do with his activity level. He’s trying to sit up – and stand up – and just move around and sleep means … he can’t do those things. So he fights it … but once he’s down he sleeps soundly and there are improvements … though slow … he is learning!

Today we’re going to the doc … he’s had this cold since his 6 month checkup at the doc … and with our trip to Texas coming up next week I want to make sure he doesn’t have an infection or anything that could be exacerbated by travel. I’m sure he’s fine and I’m just being an overly cautious mommy … but better safe than sorry I say!

Though he hasn’t mastered it yet – little Marshall is getting closer and closer to crawling! He did actually take a few “crawl steps” up on hands and knees this weekend at our photoshoot with Jen … I realized it was probably easier for him since he was bare legged … so when we got home I let him move around the house in just his onesie and he was up and down … up and down. Not quite crawling yet … but so close! He’s also becoming quite a master at pulling himself from sitting to standing – on mommy, on daddy, on the couch, in the crib. And he is just starting to “cruise” … walking himself along the couch or crib … but has lots of falls to sitting.

Other than that … looks like his 2 top teeth are coming … well of course they’re coming … I mean soon! I’m kinda hoping that’s why he’s having a harder time sleeping at night … but we’ll just see!

8 months!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Today … Marshall is 8 months old! And … it’s Daddy and my 4 year anniversary … AND the first day of Spring – though you wouldn’t know it with the weather here in Portland … gray and rainy. Surprise! hee hee.

So this week … Marshall got his second tooth not long after his first – on Sunday the 16th it popped through. I think the most amazing thing about teething is that the tooth actually coming through is the least uncomfortable part of the process (at least for Marshall). It’s the all the discomfort leading up to it that’s the hardest … so now that the bottom ones have come through we’re now working on the top ones. We’re definitely looking forward to his adorable toothy grin … YAY!

The sleeping through the night teaching is going WONDERFULLY! He’s slept through the night – I mean from 7:30 pm til 6:00 am! Though I don’t get the later morning wakeups – and I am adjusting to getting so much sleep (I actually wake up 3 times a night – ha!). The naps aren’t quite as smooth going – but we’re working on those this week. So much crying … but it’s getting better so we’re sticking with the program for now!

He’s also ALMOST crawling … seriously so close! He still army crawls but gets up on his hands and knees and hangs out – just hasn’t figured out that he can get there in that position. Very soon and then our lives will definitely change!

He’s also been giving (wet and sloppy) kisses … it’s seriously the cutest and most adorable thing he’s ever done and I look forward to more and more of them everyday!!

The last big happening in his little world was that yesterday he fell on a toy and is developing a bit of a bruise around his right eye … poor little dude … his first black eye :(

We don’t have much planned for this weekend – hoping for decent weather so Daddy can get out in the yard – get that green thumb in shape! Things are already starting to bloom and we feel so lucky that the previous owners really knew what they were doing in the garden dept. Looks like we’ll have lots of flowers, fruits and who knows what other surprises will show up!

That’s it for now.
