4 weeks … but who’s counting

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

So we are officially 36 weeks! Which means … 2-6 weeks left for baby inside my belly … then we welcome little BR into the real world!

Things are going well. I feel pretty big – but am doing ok. With the tongue lump removed – I’m a much happier Momma. We have had a busy week. I started swimming and went twice last week. I thought it would provide relief for my achy hips – which it did. But I also sore legs from the new muscles I used in that workout! The whole FH gang at shower - June 22, 2008

We haven’t made any progress on the house/nursery in the last week- this weekend was filled with an awesome derby bout and a lovely shower with my co-workers. We also got to visit with my cousin Kasha and hear her mom/birth stories. I love listening to stories of labor – since I’m getting close it’s reassuring to hear how people got through it.

Tonight we had our breastfeeding class. OHSU is wonderful – they have lactation specialists on-site to help you with nursing and are available after you go home as well. It was a great class – the instructor was a little goofy – but I suppose you have to be a little when you’re working with babies all day! We learned alot about what to expect and obstacles that arise and how to work through them. Overall – another good investment in our baby’s future. Tomorrow night is our Newborn Care class. More information for Daddy and me to prepare for BRs arrival!

This coming weekend my Mom’s coming to visit to help me just get stuff done. I’m feeling extremely overwhelmed by our basement, the living room, running errands … and Daddy is going to Salem for a Dragonboat race … a perfect time to get through my to-do list. I haven’t really gotten the crazy nesting bug … I usually only have a few hours worth of energy in me before I need a nap. Lazy Momma!

Other than that – we’re doing well but totally not ready … should be in the next week or so. Officially after 37 weeks (next Monday) Baby is considered full-term. So … then we just wait for his or her arrival!

From Babycenter.com: “Your baby is still packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. Baby now weighs almost 6 pounds (like a crensaw melon) and is more than 18 1/2 inches long. Baby’s shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered it’s body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected it’s skin during it’s nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, will form the contents of baby’s first bowel movement. At the end of this week, your baby will be considered full-term. (Full-term is 37 to 42 weeks; babies born before 37 weeks are pre-term and those born after 42 are post-term.) Most likely baby’s in a head-down position.”Note: BR has been head down for most of the pregnancy … next Dr. appt is Tuesday the 1st of July.

It’s not a tumor

Tumor - beforeSo today I went in to meet with Dr. Anderson – Ear, Nose and Throat specialist – to check out the ever growing, bleeding “Pyogenic Granuloma” on my tongue with hopes of having it removed. In case you don’t remember … the “pregnancy tumor” (as it’s known) started with a small lump on my tongue around May 8th and has grown and bled and driven me nuts ever since it came along! I thought I could live with it til the Babe came — but after a 2 hour bleeding session on June 2nd I called to have it removed or cauterized or ANYTHING!.

Tumor - no more

And today … they cut it off!! Not the most pleasant experience … but hopefully things will improve (like my appetite and a decrease in the fear of biting or poking it with a fork!). My friend said she doesn’t really know how the baby’s doing anymore cuz all I talk about is the lump on my tongue. Ugh.

Here’s the after picture. It was actually all black and tasted like burned something (tongue?). It has gone from black to grey … from what I’ve heard the tongue heals very quickly … the Dr. said up to 2 weeks. Either way I’m very happy that I won’t have to worry about a bleeding tongue during labor and am looking forward to increased appetite!

Sorry to gross anyone out …

5 weeks to go …

Monday, June 16th, 2008

This last weekend we had our “Birthing A-Z” class at OHSU. It was from 10-3 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. A crash course of sorts for parents to-be: “Childbirth A-Z will prepare you and your birth partner(s) for the physical and emotional demands of late pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum care of mom, baby and family. Childbirth A-Z concludes with a tour of OHSU’s Family Birth Center and Mother Baby Unit.”

We really enjoyed the class. We learned about when we go to the hospital, talked about what contractions feel like, different pain management and relaxation techniques, Daddy’s role, what to expect from labor and delivery, all the different stages of delivery … and watched a few videos. Nothing graphic like they warn you about – they were all unique stories about different scenarios that can happen during birth. Mostly … seems that nothing is predictable and being able to cope with all the possible changes and circumstances that come up is the best we can do and what we should prepare for.

Overall I would say I left the class feeling much more informed about what to expect from labor and delivery. More knowledge about when we go the hospital, what to expect once we get there … and to a certain degree what to expect from birth. Mostly … that no matter what happens you forget about it all when you hold your precious new little one in your arms! Thank goodness for that.

At the end we got a tour of the hospital and were able to see the labor and delivery room plus the recovery suites. OHSU has all single rooms (except 2) and an overall amazing facility and staff. We feel very lucky that they’re not only 15 minutes from our house – but such a wonderful place to bring little BR into the world!

Other than classes this weekend, we’re still working on the “nursery” … getting things put away and figuring out where things go. This weekend we picked up the glider (last big purchase) and are working on figuring out where it will go in our tiny house. While at Babies R Us we also picked up a few packs of 0-3 month onesies and a couple other needed things (including green detergent for baby clothing) and Daddy washed all the blankets and clothing. It’s all so cute … tiny! Momma has to learn to fold such little precious things!

The last items on the big list of must-dos are to install the carseat and have it checked by local law enforcement to make sure we install it correctly, and packing for the hospital. The list of to-dos is of course much longer! Mostly just moving more stuff to the basement and organizing it. Moving the shelf into BRs room and getting everything put away. Putting the mobile on the crib. Putting together the swing and vibrating chair. Gosh I think I could go on and on … maybe I should actually write this stuff down eh?

This coming weekend is busy with last Derby bout til after BR arrives and my co-workers are throwing me one more baby shower. Then we just wait … we have a Dr.s appt scheduled for July 1 and July 16. I am *hopefully* going to soon get rid of the horrible growing lumpy tumor on my tongue (finally got an appt for this coming Wednesday after a long “conversation” with the nurse). Hopefully it will allow my appetite to return, make talking more normal again and stop the bleeding. Fingers crossed it doesn’t come back before baby is born!

Weekly update on BR from Baby.com: “Your baby doesn’t have much room to maneuver now that it’s over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (honeydew melon). Because it’s so snug in your womb, baby isn’t likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times it kicks should remain about the same. Kidneys are fully developed now, and liver can process some waste products. Most of the basic physical development is now complete — baby will spend the next few weeks putting on weight.”

Granted our baby may be a little bigger than a honeydew … we’ll have to wait to see when BR comes out!

6 weeks to go … but who’s counting?

Splashdragons 2008 teamWe only have 6 weeks to go! And so much to do!

This weekend Daddy had dragon boat races  during the Rose Festival – his team, the Splashdragons did phenomenally!! They were Division 5 last year and made it to Division 2 this year! An amazing feat for a 2nd year team! On Saturday, they lost their first race and so were eliminated – but Daddy had so much fun he’s going to join a year-round team! GO DADDY! Here are more pics of his team … and more.

I had a very relaxing weekend – went to Zenana Spa for a prenatal massage on Friday evening, then dinner with some friends. Saturday I watched Daddy’s races – then got a pedicure – then twisted my ankle (it’s fine now). Sunday I was a little layed up (due to ankle) but managed to do a little more organizing in the babe’s room. There’s still a lot to do – but the “big bead project” is about 80% complete so I’m feeling good about that.

Daddy has decided that BR will be coming in 4 weeks. He’s so cute. We are going to work on a list this week of stuff to get done and start tackling it. Everything from wash the babies clothes to organize the basement to pack for the hospital. We have a birthing class this weekend at OHSU. I think after that everything will be more real. We’ll get a hospital tour and have a better idea about all thing “birth” … we will have our breastfeeding class.

Maybe then I’ll feel more comfortable reading the 9th month chapter in my book. Heh.

That’s it for this week … we’re just getting ready and excited for BRs arrival!!
